Project history

From an open network to a shared canvas.

The surviving record places Coccinella within the mid-2000s effort to make federated messaging more expressive and collaborative.

2005 · A port record appears

FreeBSD adds the Coccinella port

FreshPorts records net-im/coccinella as added on 9 November 2005, describing it as a Jabber client with whiteboard communication.

2007 · The website era

A cross-platform gallery

The historic screenshot gallery organized Windows, Mac OS X and Linux captures, listing 34 items in total.

coccinella.im launches

A post dated 29 April announced the new Drupal-based project website at coccinella.im and thecoccinella.org, with documentation, forums, a gallery and mailing-list links.

The collaboration model is documented

The site explained federated XMPP connections, group chat, presence, service discovery and multi-participant whiteboards.

Later packaging records

Debian’s package tracker retains records for version 0.96.20-9 and marks the package as removed from active development repositories. FreeBSD’s port record lists 0.96.20_2 and shows a port-maintenance update in September 2022. A package update date is not evidence of renewed upstream development; it is evidence that downstream ecosystems continued to carry the software record.

Today · Preservation, not revival

This archive does not distribute binaries, operate messaging services or claim the project has resumed. Its purpose is narrower: preserve context, point to independent records, and ensure that historic links resolve to relevant, honest pages.
